". . . teachers of children in the United States of America wrote this date on the blackboard again and again, and asked children to memorize it with pride and joy:

1492

"The teachers told the children that this was when their continent was discovered by human beings. Actually, millions of human beings were already living full and imaginative lives on the continent in 1492. That was simply the year in which sea pirates began to cheat and rob and kill them."

Breakfast of Champions, 1973, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

oooh... my five year old and i had an argument about this topic today. it's amazing the lies they are still teaching children in school. i felt so betrayed when i learned the stories behind the stories we were told in elementary school. my son is currently recreating the trail of tears in our living room; maybe i went too far.
