I learned today that the Dunn Center auditorium was built in 1916--before my grandparents were born! Silent films were shown there in the '20s, kids rollerskated there in the '50s, and the Harlem Globe Trotter basketball team once played there in the early '60s.
Does anybody want to help me put on a new roof?

I can't tell you how much i'd love to chris... arg.
so does this mean your gonna buy it and fix it up and have old fashion barn dances? that would be really cool.
chris,
what's the deal with this? did i miss something--is it "yours"?

alex - it's not mine yet. i need to raise $20,000 first somehow. i'm working on grants and such.
What about the Historic Preservation Society? I think it qualifies for assistance since it has been the cornerstone of Dunn Center social life for so long. Is Rural Development something like that? I want you to succeed. xoxo
Thanks for your support, AnnieG. I've already written the State Historical Society for info. A couple days ago I got an email from their Grants & Contracts Officer, who administers the Historic Preservation Grant Fund. She said I have to try to get the building on the National Register of Historic Places first. The building has been moved from its original location, so this might have ruined its "sanctity." Plus, there are rules: for instance, if I did get a grant, I couldn't put on a tin roof. They want it to look as close to original as possible. They'll soon be sending me some paperwork to fill out, at which point I'll know more. Que sera, sera, I guess.
Rules... always the stinkin' rules. Good luck dear cowboy.
